Why Do I Still Miss My Ex? (Even Though I Know It Wasn't Right)

You know it was not right. Maybe they hurt you, maybe you simply wanted different things, maybe you were the one who ended it. And still, you miss them. Sometimes so much it is hard to breathe.

That contradiction can make people feel like something is wrong with them. Nothing is. Missing someone and knowing they were wrong for you are not opposites. They can both be true at the same time, and usually are.

Six reasons you still miss them

1. You miss the routine as much as the person

Good-morning texts, the person you told about your day, the plans for Sunday. A relationship builds hundreds of small habits, and after a breakup they all point at an empty space. Part of what feels like missing them is missing the shape your days used to have.

2. Your memory is editing the past

After a loss, the mind tends to keep the best moments and quietly drop the rest. You remember the trip, the inside jokes, the way they looked at you early on. You forget the arguments, the waiting, the loneliness inside the relationship. This is normal, and it is also misleading.

3. You miss who you were with them

Sometimes the loss is less about them and more about a version of your life: the future you pictured, the person you were at the start, the feeling of being chosen. Those are real losses worth grieving, but they are not the same as missing the actual person.

4. Uncertainty keeps the question open

If the relationship had a lot of ups and downs, your brain got used to waiting for the good part to come back. The breakup can feel like just another "down", and part of you is still waiting. On-and-off relationships are often the hardest to get over for exactly this reason.

5. You are still in contact, even a little

Checking their profile, replying to the occasional message, hearing about them from friends: each of these keeps the attachment fed. It is very hard to stop missing someone who is still a small daily presence. (More on this in how to stop checking your ex's Instagram.)

6. You are lonely, tired, or stressed

Missing an ex often spikes when everything else is hard. They were your comfort for a long time, so when you need comfort, your mind goes to them. Notice whether your strongest moments of missing them line up with bad days in general.

What actually helps

Let yourself miss them, without acting on it

Trying not to think about someone tends to make you think about them more. Instead, allow it: "I miss them right now." Name it, let it be there, and don't treat it as an instruction. Missing someone is a feeling, not a decision.

Write down the whole story

Not a list of their faults, but an honest account: what was good, what was hard, and why it ended. Read it when the highlight reel is playing. Our guide to red flags you see after a breakup can help you remember the parts you are editing out.

Rebuild the routines

Give the empty spaces a new shape. A morning walk where the good-morning text used to be. A friend to call on the evenings you used to spend together. A new Sunday plan. The missing gets smaller as the gaps fill.

Cut the small contacts

No contact is not about punishing them. It is about letting the attachment starve. Most people find that the missing starts to ease noticeably after a few weeks of real distance. See the no contact rule for how to set it up.

Grieve the future, not just the person

If what you really miss is the life you imagined, let yourself mourn it directly. Then, slowly, start imagining a different one. It does not have to be clear yet.

Does missing them mean you should go back?

Not on its own. Missing someone tells you that they mattered and that you are in the middle of a loss. It does not tell you that the relationship would work now. The question to ask is not "do I miss them?" but "has anything changed about why it ended?" If the answer is no, the missing is something to get through, not a sign to follow.

You can miss someone and still be glad you are no longer with them. Both feelings are allowed.

Frequently asked questions

Why do I miss my ex even though they treated me badly?

After a loss, memory tends to keep the good moments and drop the hard ones, and on-and-off relationships train you to wait for the good part to return. Writing down the whole story helps you see it accurately.

Is it normal to still miss my ex months later?

Yes. Missing usually fades in waves rather than a straight line, and anniversaries or stressful periods can bring it back for a while.

Does missing my ex mean I should get back together?

Not on its own. Ask whether anything has changed about why it ended. If nothing has, the missing is something to get through, not a signal to follow.
